On this day in 1958, Elvis Presley’s mother Gladys died. At her funeral two days later Presley was so overcome with grief he was unable to stand and had to be supported. Over 500 police were at the service to keep the gigantic crowd at bay.
Mrs. Presley had been feeling ill during the summer of 1958 and as her condition worsened, Elvis insisted that she do something about it, putting his parents on a train to Memphis so that his mother could see her personal physician, Dr. Charles Clarke. On August 9th an ambulance transported Mrs. Presley from Graceland to Methodist Hospital, where her condition was listed as grave. On August 12th, Elvis, desperate to see his mother, made a dramatic threat to go AWOL. He was granted emergency leave, flying from Fort Worth to Texas with Lamar Fike and going straight to the hospital.
At approximately 3.15am, with her husband at her side, Gladys Love Presley succumbed.
Gladys Love Presley was 46.
