On this day in 1979, The Who play their first concert following the death of drummer Keith Moon at the Rainbow Theatre in London. Their new man behind the kit was Kenney Jones, a veteran of the Small Faces with Steve Marriott, as well as the Faces with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood.
In December of 1983, guitarist Pete Townshend announced that he was leaving the Who, effectively ending the group.
Jones joined the band again when the Who reunited for Live Aid in 1985, and at the Royal Albert Hall in 1988 when the group received a lifetime achievement award during the British Phonographic Industry awards. That would be his final gig with the Who; when the group announced their reunion in 1989, they had a new drummer Simon Phillips to replace him.
