September30Today in 1967, the U.K.’s first national pop radio station, Radio BBC Radio 1, was launched.

The new station was intended to take over from the various pirate radio stations, which gained immense popularity before being shut down by the government.

BBC Radio 1’s first on-air presenter was former pirate DJ Tony Blackburn from Radio Caroline. The first record he played was ‘Flowers in the Rain’ by The Move.
