On this day in 1988, Roy Orbison died of heart attack.
Orbison had begun an exhaustive schedule. His second chance at stardom had surprised him; he was quoted as saying, “It’s very nice to be wanted again, but I still can’t quite believe it.” Despite chest pains, Orbison played a few shows and took part in several interviews across Europe and the U.S.
He returned home for some rest and relaxation before he had to head to London to film two more music videos. After flying model airplanes with his son and eating dinner at his mother’s house, Orbison suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 52.
On this same day in 2011, Orbison’s second wife Barbara Orbison, his widow, died 23 years after her husband.
