Chicago Loud 9 is more soul than punk

Of all the musical genres in all the lands, I find rap to be the hardest to do well. Between lyrics and cadence, and actual musical quality – there are just so many places to fail horribly. Thank God Chicago Loud 9 finds no place to falter on their new track, ‘Punk Soul (I’m Wrong)’.

ChicagoLoud9-PunkSoulThe song opens to a wonderful big-band funk sound, complete with horns a-plenty and sultry, soulful vocals. It eventually warps into this hip hop-meets-soul-meets-funk track, and based on the band’s origin, it makes sense that they would cross so many genres so effortlessly.

The nine-member group started as a one-night-only ensemble comprised of three separate groups, but eventually morphed into one. They released their debut in the summer of 2013 – cLOUD9 – and this new track in February of this year.

‘Punk Soul (I’m Wrong)’ is also the lead single off the band’s upcoming album – check out
