ViliFiI recently had the chance to interview the members of ViliFi, an up-and-coming power rock trio from Florida. Members Shain Honkonen (lead vocals and guitar), Chris Marshall (drums), and Dylan Thomas (bass and backing vocals) create an amazing, hard-rocking, progressive sound. But don’t just take my word for it, you can hear their new album Common Eyes right here:

Raz Mataz Magazine (RMM): How long have you been playing music?

Shain: I’ve been playing since I was 13.

Chris:  I have been playing drums for about 24 years, since i was 6 years old.

Dylan: 14 years.

RMM: When and how did VilFi form?

Shain: We formed from the original line-up requiring different people to fill in when other members couldn’t make shows. For multiple reasons, previous members have recently parted ways, which has lead us to the band that we are today. We actually haven’t all played together as a band for very long, but we are quickly growing tighter than ever.

RMM: What bands or artists do you draw inspiration from?

Shain: We’re all big fans of many different forms of music, from jazz to metal and everything in between.

Chris:  If I had to pick two or three influences that bleed through the most while playing, it would be Phil Collins, Danny Carey and Terry Bozzio.

Dylan: Rush, Opeth, and a ton of jazz and R&B artists.

RMM: How would you describe your style/sound?

Shain: We like to think of it as a combination of many popular elements of multiple genres. We are never are concerned with trying to stick with a certain sound, we simply compose songs that we enjoy. It is essentially alternative rock that branches off into many different tangents.

Chris: I tell Shain that he reminds me a lot of the singer from Silverchair . . . his voice anyways. The songwriting leans toward Avenged Sevenfold a little, sometimes Chevelle and all the way over to Pink Floyd, at times.

RMM: What makes your band unique?

Shain: All of our material is very honest and true to ourselves. We really enjoy and believe in the music that we play, and hope that anyone can find something they enjoy in it also. We aren’t just trying to push some product, we do this because it’s what we live to do.

Chris: The different musical influences coming from each of us [also makes us unique]

RMM: What are your hopes for the near future?

Shain: We hope to be continually progressing and growing together while gaining the resources to tour and produce more of our music as often as possible. We are all in this to really make something happen and are willing to do whatever it takes.

Chris: I definitely want to tour Europe and record. I want to be on the next album and really put my own stamp on it. I’ve done  a lot of wood shedding recently and I have a ton of ideas waiting to be used.
