September 5, 1976

Sept5On this day in 1976, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington fell asleep at the wheel of his car while high on alcohol and drugs.

He crashed his new Ford Torino into a tree. This incident inspired Ronnie Van Zant to write ‘That Smell’ for their new album Street Survivers.

Three days after Street Survivers was released, the band was devastated by a plane crash that killed several of its members, including Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines.

The cover of the album, which had just been released, showed the band enveloped in flames.
