On this day in 1987, The Los Angeles Times reported that Michael Jackson had offered $50,000 for the bones of John Merrick, known as “The Elephant Man,” who had died in 1890.

Jackson’s manager commented on the situation: “Jackson has a high degree of respect for the memory of Merrick. He has read and studied all material about the Elephant Man, and has visited the hospital in London twice to view Merrick’s remains.”

Jackson later denied these allegations in an in depth interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1993.
