On this day in 1997, Jeffrey Scott Buckley drowned in Wolf River Harbor, a stream off the Mississippi River.

As evening approached, Buckley went for a swim while still dressed in his clothing and boots. A roadie, Keith Foti, accompanied Buckley but waited on shore. A tug boat was passing and Foti moved a guitar and a radio from the approaching rushing water. A second later, he would look back at the water to discover Buckley had vanished. A rescue team searched immediately that evening but to no avail: Buckley remained missing until his body was discovered close by, near a river boat on June 4.

The witness, Foti believes this was an accident, that Buckley did not commit suicide, and that he was dead sober. His autopsy would later confirm that there was no alcohol or drugs in Buckley’s system. Buckley was only 30 years old.

Foti also noted that Buckley entered the water while singing Led Zeppelin’ s ‘Whole Lotta Love’.
