May 21, 1970

On this day in 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young record ‘Ohio’ at Record Plant Studio 3 in Hollywood, California.

Young wrote the song after he viewed pictures in Life magazine of the 1970 Kent State shooting of four innocent students by the Ohio National Guardsmen over a school-organized protest against the invasion of Cambodia.

Some of the students who were shot had been protesting against the Campaign, while other students who had been shot were walking nearby or watching the protest from a distance. Sixty-seven rounds were fired in a period of only 13 seconds. Nine others were wounded – one of those nine now suffers from permanent paralysis.
