July23On this day in 1996, Fiona Apple released her debut album, Tidal.

Released through both Work Records as well as Columbia Records (Sony Music), it peaked at No.15 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA in December 1996. It turned platinum in July 1997, two times platinum the following October and three times platinum as of April 1999.

Tidal produced six hit singles: ‘Shadowboxer’, ‘Slow Like Honey’, ‘Never Is a Promise’, ‘Sleep to Dream’, ‘The First Taste’ and the very popular ‘Criminal’, which won a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and was named the single of 1997 in the readers’ Rolling Stone poll.

Fiona Apple was a mere 19 years old when Tidal was released.
