July 18, 1988

July18On this day in 1988, Nico (born Christa Päffgen) of The Velvet Underground died while on holiday in Ibiza, off the coast of Valencia.

While bike riding with her son Ari, Nico had a minor heart attack, fell and hit her head. A passing taxi driver found her unconscious and had difficulty getting her admitted to local hospitals. She was incorrectly diagnosed as suffering from heat exposure and died at eight o’clock that evening.

It was later revealed that Nico’s X-rays proved she had a severe cerebral hemorrhage that was the cause of death.

Nico was buried in her mother’s plot in Grunewald Forest Cemetery in Berlin.
