July 1, 1969

July 1On this day in 1969, John Lennon crashed his white British Leyland Austin Maxi car, with passengers Yoko Ono, her daughter Kyoko and his son Julian inside.

The family was holidaying in Scotland at the time and had taken a drive through Golspie in the Highlands. Lennon was apparently a notoriously bad driver who had rarely driven since passing his road test in 1965.

Lennon lost control of the car, driving it into a roadside ditch. Lennon, Ono and Kyoko sustained cuts to their faces and Ono also injured her back.

The family was taken to Golspie’s Lawson Memorial Hospital where Lennon received 17 facial stitches, Ono received 14 stitches I n her forehead, and Kyoko received four stitches. Julian was treated for shock but was otherwise unhurt.

Lennon remained in hospital for five days.
