January 25, 1980

Jan25On this day in 1980, Paul McCartney was released from custody and deported from Japan after spending nine days in a Tokyo jail.

McCartney’s arrival at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport on January 16, 1980, marked his first visit to Japan since the Beatles’ tour of 1966. The occasion was a planned 11-city concert tour with his band Wings.

Instead, Paul’s visit was restricted to a nine-day stay in the Tokyo Narcotics Detention Center after McCartney was arrested at the airport when customs officials found 219 grams of marijuana in his luggage.

The charge was originally seven years in jail, so McCartney was a very lucky fellow.
