Today in 1979, Sex Pistols bass player, Sid Vicious went on trial in New York for the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.
Three months earlier, Vicious claimed to have awoken from a drug-induced stupor to find Nancy dead in the bathroom of a single stab wound to the stomach. Vicious and Nancy had fought that night, and Vicious’ recollection of the events differed wildly – he once said he stabbed Nancy but never meant to kill her, later changing his story to claim she fell on the knife, and once again saying that he had no recollection of the night whatsoever.
Ten days after Nancy’s death, Vicious tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists. He was subsequently hospitalized.
He was eventually sentenced to 55 days at Rikers Island and was released on bail on February 1.
