On this day in 1961, Frank Sinatra launched his own record label – Reprise Records – in order to maintain artistic freedom for his own recordings.

Under Sinatra’s leadership, the label maintained that each artist had full creative freedom and complete ownership of their work, including publishing rights. At one point, major acts like Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman and The Beach Boys called the label home.
