Written in early 1992 about his relationship with Courtney Love, Cobain left the song for sometime but began work on it again after he and Love moved in together.
Cobain had made various statements on which the song was based. But considering the fact that Love gave him a heart-shaped box filled with trinkets after their first meeting, that she is a Cancer sign and he a Pisces, that the gestation lyrics were written while their child Frances Bean was in the womb, seem to be the appropriate reasons behind the text of this great song.
Recorded at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, and produced by Steve Albini, Nirvana then took the song to Scott Litt who was able to remix it so that Cobain was satisfied with the vocals and bass tracks raised to increase the prominence that he felt was lacking in the original track. He also added backing vocals.
‘Heart-Shaped Box’ reached No.1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
