Are Beats by Dre really worth the money?

You’ve probably heard of Beats, or at least seen them advertised or carefully placed in television shows and movies. They are some of the most popular headphones on the market, and they have a huge following. A lot of it is thanks to all the media attention they’ve received, as well as their stylish appearance. With a pretty hefty price tag on most models, we have to ask: are Beats by Dre really worth the money?

What are Beats by Dre?
Most commonly, these are known simply as Beats. They were developed by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine in 2006, and were designed to give people a premium listening experience when it comes to playing their favourite music. In 2014, Beats was acquired by Apple, and this only helped the brand to move forward. The creators say that they were made for music lovers, but we’re going to look at the pros and cons.

What’s good about them?
For starters, they have an excellent budget range that really delivers amazing sound quality, without you needing to spend a fortune. For a brand that receives so much criticism over the sound, this seems to be several steps in the right direction. The versatility of their range makes them appealing to everyone.

They are some of the best for bass. It’s true, and there is actually very little dispute over this in general. Beats offer some of the best bass levels you are likely to find in premium headphones. Even their budget range has excellent bass, and this is important if you like listening to most genres of music. Everything from rock to hip-hop has bass.

They look good. It’s a superficial pro, but you cannot deny that these headphones certainly look stylish on whoever is wearing them. With a variety of colours and styles, you are sure to look great when you walk around wearing a pair of these.

What’s bad about them?
You’re getting less for more. With Beats, you are paying more for fewer features. The treble and mids are poor, which the good bass barely makes up for. There are a lot of other headphones out there that will give you more sound, and better bass, for a lot less money. Beats tend to be about fashion, rather than sound.

A lot of the bad points are due to the low-quality bass. The bass might sound good now, but as soon as you switch to a pair of headphones with high-quality bass, you will notice the difference immediately. The bass from Beats tends to be very artificial, drowning out some of the other subtleties in the music that you are listening to.

The overall build quality is also poor. The materials used to make them are incredibly cheap, costing around $20 to make per set. The markup on that is pretty insane, especially for something that can’t even meet the sound quality standards of other, cheaper models.

To Conclude…
Beats by Dre have some good points, but the negatives overwhelm them in this case. If you are comfortable paying more for a pair of headphones that offer you less than cheaper models, then Beats are good for you. However, if you are looking for something that delivers amazing sound quality and a true bass, look elsewhere and give Beats a miss.
