When solo rocker Timothy Showalter released his first album Leave Ruin in 2009 under his popular pseudonym Strand of Oaks, he kick-started an enduring folk rock career that led to 2014’s anticipated album HEAL, which was named one of the best albums of that year. Back by popular demand, Showalter’s Strand of Oaks collaborated with music producer John Congleton.
With a sense of new wave in the opening, ‘Heal’ soon barrels into a near video-game like vibe with a sound filter voice. With the Congleton mix, it sounds a lot more digital than the original version. Unfortunately, the filter takes away from the soft-spoken vocals with an occasionally raspier edge that Showalter is known for. As far as remixes go, it’s not a terrible attempt but it’s pretty routine. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t give this electrified version a try, though.
