That’s how the latest from B.C. rapper SonReal opens, like a warning to others in the game.
And it’s a warning they need if SonReal is going to continue on this trajectory.
“Can I Get A Witness” (listen on Spotify or to the preview below) is an insanely catchy song with funk undertones and a soulful vibe. It’s rife with the rapper’s amazing wordplay – and is that a hint of cowbell hear?
It’s a toe-tapping, sing-along kind of song, and will get stuck in your head almost immediately.
And, as usual, it’s at the opposite end of the pretension spectrum, but pushes the envelope to places we’ve never seen it go… Like Manitowoc County, the setting of Netflix’s hit documentary Making a Murderer, from which the rapper took inspiration for his single cover art (he’s also hosting a contest that will take a lucky winner to the Wisconsin town).
“Can I Get A Witness” is also the first single off his upcoming debut, One Long Dream, though there’s no word yet on a release date. Suffice to say, we’ll be waiting impatiently.
