On this day in 1976, Jerry Lee Lewis was arrested outside of Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion after he supposedly waved a pistol and demanding to see “The King.”
According to Lewis, he had simply been given a gift of a gun from a friend, Elvis had been attempting to reach Lewis by phone 15 times, so Lewis drove over to Graceland and misjudged where the gates were, causing him to hit the gates and alarm security – who arrived to see a gun sitting on Lewis’s dashboard. They called the police. Six squad cars showed up and surrounded Lewis, who was very intoxicated. He attempted to throw a champagne bottle out his car window but the window was rolled up and he ended up smashing both the window and bottle, “knocking it clean out”.
