A hotel staff member reported seeing needles beside Gray’s bed and pills scattered throughout the room. On June 21, 2010, autopsy results were released, stating that Gray had died of an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl. Gray’s autopsy had also shown signs of serious heart disease.
A private funeral was held on May 28, 2010. Paul Gray is buried at the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa.
In September 2012, Gray’s physician Daniel Baldi was charged with involuntary manslaughter causing Gray’s death, as well as the deaths of eight others. He was accused of prescribing high-dose narcotics to Gray, despite him being a known drug addict. Doctor Baldi appeared in court on September 27, 2012, to face the charges. He pleaded not guilty.
Gray is survived by his widow, Brenna, and their daughter, born after Gray’s passing. She was named October.
