March 31, 1995

On this day in 1995, an assassination on Jimmy Page’s life was attempted.

Page, unaware of what was happening about 50 feet away, was performing “Kashmir” while attendee Lance Cunningham tried make his way onto the stage to kill Page. Cunningham slashed at fans with a pocket knife as he dropped onto the floor behind the stage while being subdued by employees and a stage hand.

A self-described former Led Zeppelin fan, Cunningham had found religion, and said, “he found himself enraged when he heard Page and Plant play ‘Satanic’ music”.  A particular irritation was the appearance of an Italian flag during one song, which Cunningham regarded as a gesture of support for the “anti-Christ”.

“He said he was going to`off Jimmy Page,'” said police Chief J. Dalton who was on the scene.

Cunningham was charged and jailed on three counts of felonious assault and one count of aggravated assault.
