On this day in 1995, rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard took an MTV news crew along for a ride with his wife and children in a stretch limo, where he stopped to pick up food stamps, proving that the welfare ID card on his album cover was real. The stunt spiced up the national debate over welfare reform, as ODB became a high-profile case study on abuse of the system. He was eligible for the program because he had yet to file his tax return declaring the income earned from his advance.
As a member of The Wu-Tang Clan, he shared in the profits from their million plus selling debut record Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) that was released in 1993. Either ODB was trying to prove a point about not making money in the music business, or he just spent all of his funds on crack and 40’s? He ended the clip with this to say: “I’m glad to get the food stamps, why would you want to get free money?”
