March 20, 1982

On this day in 1982, “Pac-Man Fever” was performed by the duo Buckner & Garcia on American Bandstand.

The single, from their album of the same name, had previously hit No.9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold by the RIAA, signifying the first successful song about or based on a video game.

By 1982 video games had only become popular in the prior few years, and the appearance of coin-operated video game arcades (where Pac-Man reigned supreme at the time) signified the first time computing technology was embraced by home consumers for its entertainment value alone.
