On this day in 1970, Chubby Checker was arrested in Niagara Falls, NY.
Checker was traveling with three members of his entourage including his road manager, organist and guitarist, when they were busted with marijuana and unidentified pills by U.S. Customs as they attempted to drive their van across Rainbow Bridge.
Checker steadfastly denied all allegations and said that what he was addicted to was sex, not drugs.
“I’m hooked on a little alcohol and a lot of sex,” Checker said to police.
According to Checker, there were no drugs in his luggage or on his person, and he had been clean for nearly three years at the time of his arrest.
Checker was charged, but as I write this I am finding conflicting articles that state the charges were dropped, however, I am unable to find proper legal evidence of the charges having ever been thrown out.
