January5Today in 1975, The Wiz, an all-black musical version of The Wizard of Oz, opened on Broadway.

The production would go on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It starred Stephanie Mills as Dorothy, and Dee Dee Bridgewater as Glinda.

The play also spawned a film adaptation, which put Diana Ross in the role of Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, and Richard Pryor as the Wiz.
