Ahead of the album’s April 8 release, the band HIGHS pointed to the experimental technique from where the record gets its name. The British Navy used brightly coloured camo during World War I as a way of misleading the enemy, essentially hiding in plain sight.
HIGHS has taken that idea and run with it. Dazzle Camouflage (2016) touches a number of musical styles and still maintains its pleasant weirdness.
“Handsome Man” embodies that weirdness, with its perfect offbeat feel, tapping drums, tugging synths and swaying vocals.
“Careful” takes on a surfy tone, while the soft-opening “Easy” will surprise you with dizzying vocals and almost-industrial music.
“Acting Strange” adds a feel-good vibe to the record, with its fun disco feel. And, for a strong, quick-paced end to the album, we’ve got “Gold Teeth,” with its marching drums, quirky guitars, and echoey, synthey vocals.
Dazzle Camouflage is nothing short of an auditory pleasure. But don’t take my word for it: check it out yourself at www.highsmusic.com.
