August 27, 1965

August27Today in 1965, The Beatles met Elvis Presley at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn.

Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, introduced the two, after which an awkward silence ensued.

Presley is reported to have then said, “If you dam guys are gonna sit here and stare at me all night, I’m gonna go to bed.”

Things got worse after John Lennon said that Elvis should make some records like those from his early career with Sun Records. Presley took offence to the comment, understanding it to imply that his career had gone steadily downhill.
