Mike Maitland, president of MCA Records, was in the audience that night. He later signed John to his label.
The show was destined to be a success. John’s early manager, Ray Williams, hired publicist Norm Winter to promote the event to the press. Winter’s plan include a red double-decker bus with the slogan: Elton John Has Arrive. Neil Diamond introduced John on stage to a packed house.
John’s setlist included ‘Your Song’, ‘I Need You to Turn To’, ‘Take Me to the Pilot’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, and ‘Bad Side of the Moon’.
