August25Today in 1970, Elton John made his U.S. debut at the Troubadour club in Los Angeles.

Mike Maitland, president of MCA Records, was in the audience that night. He later signed John to his label.

The show was destined to be a success. John’s early manager, Ray Williams, hired publicist Norm Winter to promote the event to the press. Winter’s plan include a red double-decker bus with the slogan: Elton John Has Arrive. Neil Diamond introduced John on stage to a packed house.

John’s setlist included ‘Your Song’, ‘I Need You to Turn To’, ‘Take Me to the Pilot’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, and ‘Bad Side of the Moon’.
