On this day in 2015, Don McLean’s original paperwork to his immortalized song, “American Pie,” was sold at Christie’s Auction House for $1.2 million.
Two people fought for the 16-page manuscript, one in the room and one over the phone. The winning bid went to the collector in the room who wished to remain anonymous. The 16 pages included the original working manuscript and typed drafts of the song. Bidding started at US$500,000 and rose to US$1.2 million in just four minutes.
McLean had this to say about the sale: “I thought it would be interesting as I reach age 70 to release this work product on the song ‘American Pie’ so that anyone who might be interested will learn that this song was not a parlor game.”
