April 15, 1927

On this day in 1927, 15 inches of rain fell on New Orleans in 18 hours, later inspiring the Randy Newman song “Louisiana 1927.”

The great Mississippi flood of 1927 broke 145 levees, flooded 17 million acres of land and killed 250 people.

It was the most devastating flood in the history of the United States.
