Nominated for: Best World
What was the first thing that came to mind when you learned you were nominated? We were whale watching in the St. Lawrence that day and saw these amazing 26 metre fin whales up close. We had been planning that trip for years and finally seeing those magnificent creatures in the wild is rather a surreal out-of-body experience. When I got back to the hotel I saw the nomination notice in my email box. What I thought was, what a perfect way too end the perfect day.
What will you do if you win? The “Asia Beauty” album features many local Chinese traditional instrumental virtuosos along with some of the city’s best jazz, folk and classical musicians. I would use the win to help bring awareness to the many master musicians living in our midst here in Toronto.
Why should you win? Same reasons really. I think a win in World Music in the TIMA will boost the perception of the local Chinese traditional music community. Critics and music specialists in Hong Kong and China have already said how startling it is that a CD like “Asia Beauty” with performances of this calibre can be produced in North America. It is a testament to the depth of talent in the Asian art community in the GTA.
If you weren’t nominated, who would you be rooting for? Everyone! I am familiar with the music most of the nominees and they are all excellent artists. They are all bringing their unique voice to the Toronto music scene and all deserve to be celebrated.
Other comments? I am really looking forward to the Gala Awards ceremony next week at Revival and I feel very honoured and wish all the nominees the very best of luck.
