May 27, 1987

On this day in 1987, U2’s concert at the Flaminio Stadio in Rome set off earthquake alarms as a result of the noise level.

The group’s music rumbled through the neighborhoods of Rome with such force that it startled the residents. Police and fire stations said residents of the swank Parioli and Flaminio neighborhoods swamped local emergency switchboards with reports of rattling windows and shaking furniture. When officials set out to investigate, they found the cause was not an earthquake, but a U2 concert! may27
