On this day in 1967, while performing at the Astoria Theatre in London, Jimi Hendrix gave a landmark performance when he closed his set by setting fire to his 1965 Fender Stratocaster.
Hendrix was hospitalized after the show for minor burns to his hands. His press officer Tony Garland said he had taken the guitar during the chaos that occurred after the incident. Garland kept it in his parents’ garage in England. Garland’s nephew sold the Stratocaster at an auction in 2008 for $575,000.
Hendrix only burnt two guitars on stage, this being his first and later the more famous incident which was caught on film at the Monterey Festival.
