On this day in 1993, Beck’s ‘Loser’ was printed by Bong Load Custom Records as a single on 12″ vinyl.
A mere 500 copies were pressed.
‘Loser’ quickly became a hit and received immediate radio airplay which got the major record labels such as Geffen, Warner Bros. and Capitol fighting to sign Beck.
Geffen offered a non-exclusive contract which allowed him an unusual amount of creative freedom, with Beck free to release material under small, independent labels. Beck singed with Geffen the following December.
By the time Beck’s first album under Geffen, Mellow Gold was released on March 1, 1994, ‘Loser’ had already hit the top 40 and the music video was circulating daily.
