March 18, 1965

On this day in 1965, a tractor-trailer carrying 15 tons of bananas through Pennsylvania lost control and crashed into cars, telephone poles, and houses on its way down a hill, injuring many people and killing the driver.

Singer/Songwriter Harry Chapin told the story of the disastrous event in his song, ’30,000 Pounds Of Bananas’.

Chapin himself would later die in an auto mobile accident in 1981.March18
