On this day in 1983, Derek and the Dominos’ drummer Jim Gordon, who was already undergoing psychiatric treatment and suffering from schizophrenia, had been hearing voices in his head. In particular he would hear his mother’s voice telling him to starve himself, not to sleep and not to play the drums.
He brutally attacked and murdered his mother with a hammer and knife in their home. Gordon, who co-wrote the band’s biggest hit, ‘Layla’, was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison.
As of 2014 prisoner #C89262, age 69, admission date July 13, 1984, is still serving his sentence at the California Medical Facility.
