Canadian rapper and Aboriginal rights activist Joey Stylez recently released this new track, “Pride of Lions”, from his Grey Magic EP, enlisting the help of Canadian electronic music icon Martina Sorbara from Dragonette. Stylez described the instant connection he felt with Sorbara when the two met at the JUNO awards, ultimately leading to the collaboration we have this year.
Sorbara has a voice that takes on a different tone here, but it’s still characterized by her synth-rich style. Joey Stylez comes across as a more typical rapper in a song with generic beats. There isn’t much that stands out with this song, which is unfortunate because I’m a fan of Dragonette.
Regardless, I hope to see more from these two in the future. This collaboration could use a bit of experimentation to get a great and unique sound.
