January 13, 1979

Jan13On this day in 1979, the YMCA filed a lawsuit against the group, The Village People.

The lawsuit was over their hit single ‘Y.M.C.A.’, which the YMCA claimed was defaming to the organization.

The suit was not only later dropped, but the YMCA adopted the song as their unofficial commercial jingle after seeing the huge popularity boost the group brought them.

Later, the U.S. Navy recruited the Village People to try to work similar magic for Navy recruitment.
