February 14, 1958

Feb14On this day in 1958, CBS‘ Walter Cronkite reported that the government of Iran banned rock and roll for being unhealthy and anti-Islamic.

The “unhealthy” claim was backed by Iranian doctors who warned of hip damage due to “extreme gyrations.”

In 1979, Iran banned Western music as well. This inspired The Clash to write ‘Rock the Casbah’, which was ultimately used as the American Army’s national anthem during the first Gulf War in 1991.
