Feb1On this day in 1949, RCA introduced the 45 RPM record.

It was seven inches wide and played at a faster speed than the traditional 33-1/3, providing better sound quality. The design was a hit, and 45s became known as “singles.”

The RCA records came in classification colours based on the genre of music it held:

  • Popular (Black)
  • Classical (Red)
  • Popular Classical (Midnight blue)
  • Children’s  (Yellow)
  • Country and Western (Green)
  • Blues and Rhythm (Cerise)
  • International (Sky blue)
