On this day in 1999, David Bowie played host for the controversial art show “Sensation: Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection,” offering a virtual guided tour at his website, www.davidbowie.com.
The online premiere opened in conjunction with its real world display at The Brooklyn Museum of Art. BowieNet members received a 12-hour advanced preview of the online viewing. Being the official guide of this headlining exhibit, Bowie provided Audio commentary on the art pieces in the collection for both the Internet and museum visitors.
The show included Damien Hirst’s piece titled, “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” (a shark suspended in formaldehyde) as well as Tracey Emin’s tent titled, “Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995”.
