Slight Birching, Vancouver’s lo-fi neo-folk act, who is sometimes known as Sean Travis Ramsay, released the single ‘Currency’ last week. The song is off Slight Birching’s upcoming album Cultural Envelope, to be released August 12.
The track opens with a plucky acoustic guitar, and a distant and simple drum beat. A voice enters over the eerie and subtle oohs in the background, and almost talk-sings over the music without the vocals or the music taking precedence for the listener, instead working together to draw you in.
The song is, to say the least, absolutely mesmerizing.
Then, ‘Currency’ ends – rather abruptly – and closes with a taunting laugh.
Slight Birching knows he’s got you.
You’ve followed him on the bus, you drank the kool-aid and now, here you sit, waiting for August 12 for the album to land.
