September 10, 1963
On this day in 1963, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were traveling in London when they encountered The Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Oldham, who had worked as a promoter for The Beatles earlier in the year. Oldham invited the pair to watch The Stones rehearse.
While there, Lennon and McCartney completed a song they were working on, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, and gave it to The Rolling Stones, who used it as their second U.K. single.
Watching Lennon and McCartney compose a song inspired Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to start writing more originals.
