Welsh first met Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo in Boston in 1997, while Weezer was officially on a break. The two jammed together and Welsh was offered the full-time position in Weezer when bassist Matt Sharp left the band in 1998.
Welsh played bass on the band’s third album, Weezer , which included songs ‘Hash Pipe’ and ‘Island in the Sun’. It would be Welsh’s only album with the band.
In 2001, Welsh quit Weezer after suffering a nervous breakdown. Soon after, Welsh found himself in a psychiatric hospital, following a drug-assisted suicide attempt.
Welsh had sought treatment for his mental health issues and began to paint. By 2011, Welsh was an established artist with a sizable following on both Twitter and Facebook.
Weezer was on tour through the fall of 2011 and Welsh had planned to catch their show at RIOTfest in Chicago on Sunday, October 9. Welsh had tweeted his excitement about “taking a trip to see the boys”.
On September 26, 2011, Welsh tweeted this: “dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today”. Which was followed by a second tweet a minute later which read, “correction – the weekend after next”.
No one knows whether it was accidental or intentional.
Welsh was 40 years old.
