October 13, 1960

Oct13On this day in 1960, ‘Save the Last Dance for Me’ by The Drifters hit No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Charts.

The song was written by Doc Pomus, who struggled with polio as a young boy and walked with the help of crutches and later relied on a wheelchair.

This song tells the story of Doc Pomus and his experience at his wedding. Since Pomus is bound to a wheelchair, he told his wife that she was free to dance and socialize with other men throughout the evening, but she should not forget that she would be going home with him.
