Oct11On this day in 1963, Edith Piaf died from liver cancer.

Piaf departed this world while at her villa in Plascassier, on the French Riviera.

Drifting in and out of consciousness for several months prior to her demise, it is rumoured that Piaf’s body was driven back to Paris secretly so that fans would think she had died in her hometown.

She is buried in Pere Laschaise Cemetery in Paris next to her daughter Marcelle.

Piaf was denied a funeral mass by the Roman Catholic archbishop of Paris due to her lifestyle, which included bouts of alcoholism and drug addiction. Piaf’s funeral procession drew 100,000 mourners onto the streets of Paris.

Edith Piaf was 47 years old.
