May 7, 1992

Today in 1992, a black leather jacket owned by John Lennon (between 1960 and 1963) before The Beatles hit the big time, was sold at Christie’s Auction House in London for £24,200 (USD $43,200). The item was sold at a world record price for a piece of rock star clothing.

The anonymous buyer at the auction beat the previous record of £16,500 for Michael Jackson’s white glove in December 1991.

Christie’s had expected the jacket, which Lennon had given to a cousin, to go for less than £10,000.
