On this day in 2003, June Carter Cash died at age 73 in Nashville, Tenn., following complications after a heart-valve replacement surgery. Carter was with her husband of 35 years, Johnny Cash, when she passed.
Her life was full of ups and downs, husbands and children, but music never left her heart and she continued to sing all her life.
During Carter’s funeral, stepdaughter Rosanne Cash declared that “if being a wife were a corporation, then June would have been the CEO. It was her most treasured role.”
Johnny Cash, the love of her life would pass four months later. They are now resting beside each other in Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Tennessee. From the footage and interviews of Cash after Carter’s death, it isn’t too much of a leap to say Cash died of a broken heart.
